Winter season is coming: be ready to protect your dog from low temperatures. Read our tips!
Winter is almost here and it is very important to be ready and protect our four-legged friends from cold following some easy and practical tips.
- Healthy coat: coat’s main function is to protect dogs’ skin from cold in Winter, as well as from heat in Summer. Coat has an essential thermal insulation function for our four-legged friends, so you should promote its health with a correct nutrition. For example, foods rich in Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids help keeping skin and coat in optimal conditions, thus improving their protective function;
- Grooming: even if temperatures drop, you should bath your dog regularly. When grooming them in winter months, please be sure that your dog’s coat is well dry. In particular, you should check the undercoat, that is the soft, thin but very thick layer which directly covers skin: in fact, the undercoat has a thermal insulation function, therefore it’s important it is well dry;
- Outdoor life: if your four-legged friend lives mainly outdoor in Winter as well, please always check that their drinking water is not frozen. However, there should always be an indoor and warm place for them to go in. If you live in a snowy area, it’s also important to check that your dog - especially a curious puppy - doesn’t eat too much snow: certainly they will find it funny and refreshing, but actually eating too much fresh snow can cause dangerous gastroenteritis to your dog;
- Dog’s age and features: if you have a puppy, a senior dog or a dog with specific illnesses, remember to take them out for a walk mainly during daytime, when temperatures are warmer;
- Correct nutrition: in Winter, your dog needs more calories, in order to keep their body temperature constant. A correct nutrition is, therefore, crucial. Oasy foods, both dry and wet, include a lot of meat, which is essential to provide your dog with the nutrients they need to promote their health.
