How to familiarise a cat with a new home

Moving to a New Home is one of life’s most exciting yet challenging experiences. On one hand, there’s the joy of starting a new chapter and discovering a different environment; on the other, the stress of logistics and adaptation.
For cats, relocating can be a particularly delicate moment. While we humans can plan and organize a move, for our feline friends, this change can be a source of anxiety and confusion.
Here are some useful tips on how to help a cat settle into a new home.

1) Respect Your Cat’s Pace

Cats are creatures of habit, deeply attached to their territory and daily routines. A change in environment can be unsettling and take time to adjust to. Don't worry if your feline friend acts unusually or anxiously during this transition phase. Every cat has its own timeline for feeling comfortable in a new home!
Be present to comfort your cat during this period and offer love and attention while they explore their new surroundings.

2) Watch Out for Potential Threats

Before bringing your cat into the new home, it’s crucial to identify potential threats that could pose a threat to their safety. Carefully inspect the new space for any dangerous elements or risk areas, such as unsecured windows or balconies, exposed electrical cords, or sharp objects. Before allowing your cat to explore freely, make sure the home is cat-proof. Taking precautions from the start will help ensure a stress-free and secure environment during the move and beyond.

3) Create a Familiar and Peaceful Space

In the new home, set up a quiet area where your cat can feel safe. This space should include everything they need, and if possible, try to recreate a familiar environment similar to your previous home. This will help your cat feel more at ease.

4) Use the Litter Box as a Reference Point

During the move, you can use the litter box as a reference point to help your cat orient themselves in the new home. Place it in a quiet and accessible spot, preferably in the room where your cat will spend most of their time or in a secluded area.

5) Maintain Routine and Feeding Habits

Helping a cat settle into a new home also means keeping their habits and routines as consistent as possible, especially their feeding schedule. Mealtime is an essential moment for every cat.
The food you provide should be the same as what your cat was used to eating in their previous home, and feeding times should remain unchanged. Avoid sudden changes in their nutrition, as these could cause additional stress.
