Like all animals, cats also have their preferences. There are behaviours they appreciate and others they shy away from. Here are five things to do (or not to do) for a peaceful living together.
How wonderful it is to come home and be greeted by a cat’s purring? Between cuddles, playtime, and naps,
the mutual affection that a cat and a human can share is truly special.
As with all animals,
cats have preferences and tastes that need to be understood and respected. And we're not just talking about the fact that most cats dislike baths!
Here are the
five things to do (and also to avoid)
to make your cat love you.
1) Pet and stroke them, but don’t overdo it Cuddles are an
essential moment in the life of a cat and their human. They strengthen the bond and enhance mutual well-being.
However,
excessive affection may not always be tolerated by our feline friends. For a cat,
physical contact requires a good dose of
balance and respect, and that’s why it’s often our feline companion who decides when and how much affection they want to receive.
2) Don’t ignore your cat when they ask for attention Strong-willed and independent, yes, but not solitary!
Cats love to socialize (as also explained in the article “
Cats and Science: Three Studies on Their Behavior”), and just as they don't appreciate excessive cuddles, they
don’t like being ignored.
The advice is to
pay attention to your cat, especially when you come home and they come to greet you, and also
spend quality time with them every day. Whether for cuddles or playtime, the rule is simple:
never ignore the attention your cat needs.
3) Protect them from loud noises and strong smells Cats have
highly sensitive hearing and sense of smell. That’s why they
don’t appreciate loud, sudden sounds like shouting, vacuum cleaners, or loud music. They can easily become scared or agitated.
For your cat’s well-being, it’s important to
ensure the environment is as calm as possible. Therefore, avoid playing music at a very high volume or making loud, sudden noises.
The same rule applies to smell: since cats prefer natural scents, strong or overpowering fragrances can be bothersome. Again, it’s best not to overdo it with perfumes, either on themselves or in the environment!
4) Respect their natural attention to cleanliness Even though many
cats don’t fully enjoy water and baths, in reality, a
cat is a particularly
clean and hygienic animal and takes care of their own grooming.
This same
attention extends to
the environment they live in.
Therefore, to
make your cat love you, it’s necessary to
respect their cleanliness standards! In simple terms: regularly taking care of their litter box and, more generally, cleaning their areas will certainly promote peace and well-being!
5) Pay attention to their meals and you’ll make them happy Mealtime is an extremely important moment for a cat, and it’s also an opportunity to
show them how much you care about their well-being.
Respecting their eating habits, as well as their natural food preferences (alternating
dry food with
paté,
chunks in gravy, or
mousse) and organizing the area to ensure it is comfortable are just a few things you should do. If you want to learn more, discover more
